Robert Gsellman Stellar In 3-1 Sand Gnats Win

Savannah 3, Augusta 1

The Savannah Sand Gnats played the Augusta GreenJackets in front of 2,742 fans Thursday evening at Grayson Stadium. Fans saw great pitching from both teams. Savannah won 3-1.

Augusta scored their run in the first inning. DH Shayne Houck singled, advanced to third on a single by shortstop Matt Duffy, and scored on a sacrifice fly.

Savannah scored two runs in the 4th inning. Second baseman Yucary De La Cruz led off the inning with a double and reached third on a single by center fielder Eudy Piña. Both runners scored on a double by Jayce Boyd. Boyd was 2-for-4 with 2RBI’s and is now hitting .342.

The Sand Gnats scored their third run in the 8th inning. Shortstop Phillip Evans led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Evans scored on a ground ball hit to the shortstop who was charged with a throwing error to first base.

Savannah starter, Robert Gsellman (2-1) was stellar, pitching seven innings and allowed just one run off three hits. He struck out three and walked one. Paul Sewald pitched the eighth inning without any issues. Closer Bret Mitchell allowed a hit in the 9th and struck out one to earn save number nine on the season.

Game two of the four game series starts at 7:05 pm Friday evening at Grayson Stadium.
