MLB Pipeline released their list of the top 30 prospects in the Mets organization in anticipation of the 2017 season on Tuesday. It should come as a surprise to no one that Amed Rosario leads the group, but here’s how the rest of the list shakes out:
- SS Amed Rosario
- 1B Dominic Smith
- RHP Justin Dunn
- LHP Thomas Szapucki
- RHP Robert Gsellman
- OF Desmond Lindsay
- SS Gavin Cecchini
- OF Brandon Nimmo
- SS Andres Gimenez
- 1B Peter Alonso
- C Tomas Nido
- OF Wuilmer Becerra
- LHP Anthony Kay
- RHP Marcos Molina
- RHP Merandy Gonzalez
- SS Luis Carpio
- SS Luis Guillorme
- SS Gregory Guerrero
- OF Ricardo Cespedes
- LHP Josh Smoker
- C Ali Sanchez
- 3B Jhoan Urena
- SS Milton Ramos
- LHP P.J. Conlon
- 3B David Thompson
- RHP Chris Flexen
- SS Colby Woodmansee
- 3B Eudor Garcia
- C Patrick Mazeika
- 2B T.J. Rivera
If you want to talk shortstop depth, the Mets certainly have it. Pipeline lists eight, and it doesn’t get much deeper than that. It’s great to see Carpio and Molina still where they are coming off seasons lost due to serious injuries, and Kay coming in at 13 should give fans an idea of what to expect when he returns from Tommy John surgery to make his professional debut in 2018.
While Pipeline’s list aligned nicely with our 2017 MMN list, there are certainly bound to be players for whom the lists disagree on. That’s evident by Ramos’ ranking (MLB 23/MMN 52, -29) as well as the placement of Mazeika (MLB 29/MMN 44, -15). That’s not to discredit either of them, but Pipeline seemingly put less stock into Ramos’ 2016 numbers than we did.
There are five players on Pipeline’s list who will surpass their rookie statuses in 2017, with the potential for more. When they are removed, it will be interesting to see who is granted a spot on the list. Phillip Evans, Corey Taylor, and Harol Gonzalez look like good bets to reach the top 30 at some point this season.
So far the best ranking I think. Good to see Dunn getting recognition.
