Greenville 1, Savannah 0

Game six of the six game series between the Savannah Sand Gnats and the Greenville Drive was played in front of 1,681 fans Monday at Grayson Stadium. Fans saw an exciting game with excellent pitching from both teams. Neither team collected more than three hits, and only one run was needed to decide the winner and loser.

Greenville was the team to score that run, and they did so in the second inning. Third baseman Keaton Briscoe was hit by a pitch, and a single from first baseman Boss Moanaroa sent Brisco to third. Catcher Leonel Escobar hit a ground ball to the first baseman, Brian Harrison, who attempted a double play by stepping on first and tossing it down to second base. The throw wasn’t in time to end the inning, allowing Brisco to score the lone run.

Marcos Camarena took the hard luck loss for the Gnats, throwing six innings and allowing one run on three hits, one walk, and six strikeouts. His season ERA settles in at 3.27. Wanel Mesa, Paul Sewald, and Beck Wheeler each contributed a scoreless inning of relief to finish out the ballgame, but the Savannah bats weren’t able to push a run across to tie or take the lead.

Savannah plays their first playoff game Wednesday evening against the Augusta Green Jackets in Augusta, Georgia.
