Sand Gnats Sweep Another Doubleheader from Greenville

The Savannah Sand Gnats and the Greenville Drive played a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Grayson Stadium. For the second straight day, Savannah swept Greenville, winning Saturday’s games 4-2 and 6-4.

Game One:
In the first inning, Savannah scored three runs. Maikis De La Cruz  doubled and advanced to third on a ground out and an error-he scored on a balk. Cole Frenzel walked and two runs scored on a double by Stefan Sabol. Savannah added another run in the third inning.

Greenville scored two runs in the fifth inning in an effort to start mounting a comeback. Boss Moanaroa doubled and scored on a single by Felix Sanchez. A double by Reed Gragnani then brought around Moanaroa to score.

Savannah starter, Luis Cessa, pitched great in a complete game effort. He threw seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits, no walks, and seven strikeouts. With the win, Cessa is now 8-4 and has an ERA of 3.12.

Game Two:
It was another big inning for Savannah to start off the game, as they jumped out to a four-run lead. Eudy Piña led off with a single, followed by a Brandon Nimmo walk. Dilson Herrera reached base on an error, then Cole Frenzel singled to score the first run. A double by Sabol plated the next two runs. Jeff Reynolds drove in a run with a single.The Gnats continued to pile on the runs, scoring two more in the second inning.

Greenville scored a run in the second inning, which started with a Mario Martinez double. He went to third on a single by Tim Roberson, and then he scored on a ground out double play. Doubles by Martinez and Kendrick Perkins scored a run in the fourth inning, as well. Greenville scored runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but it wasn’t enough to avoid the sweep.

Jake Kuebler started and pitched five innings for Savannah, allowing two runs on seven hits, two walks, and four strikeouts in getting the win.

Eastarlin Morel pitched one inning, allowing one run on two hits, no walks, and one one strikeout. Beck Wheeler closed things out and earned his 19th save, pitching one inning and allowing one run on one hit, one walk, and two strikeouts.

The announced attendance was 1,733.

Both teams play at 2:05pm Sunday at Grayson Stadium.
