New York Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson was a guest on Mike Francesa’s radio show on WFAN this afternoon. Alderson touched upon plenty of topics, but the biggest one was the proposed timing of Zack Wheeler‘s major league debut.
While he didn’t come out and say it explicitly, it sounds like a virtual certainty Wheeler will make his Mets debut on June 18th at Turner Field against the Atlanta Braves. The Mets will be playing five games in four days from June 17th to the 20th, with a doubleheader taking place on the 18th. Terry Collins said Matt Harvey is scheduled to throw the night game of that twin bill, which would leave the day game for their top pitching prospect.
What a day of pitching! That will be an exciting day for Mets fans, as we get a glimpse of what the future of the rotation could look like for years to come.
Alderson also mentioned Travis d’Arnaud did get rid of the boot on his left foot today, but isn’t permitted to run for two more weeks. While he’ll be a lock to join the team in September, his most recent injury will prevent him from getting to the big leagues any time before then.
I think Adam Rubin called the Braves game on the 18th, at least a few weeks ago. This is great. It’ll be a great day to get to watch Harvey and Wheeler both pitch for us. Then we can get back to trying not to lose 100 games this season.
You’re absolutely right, Hank. Rubin did call this series to be the one we’d see Wheeler debut, and he did it about a month ago. Let’s hope having both him and Harvey in one rotation can give the rest of the team a jolt to get going.
