Savannah Splits Second Straight Double-Header, 3-2 And 4-0

The Savannah Sand Gnats scored three runs in the top of the third inning and held on for a 3-2 victory over Augusta in the first game of a doubleheader Monday night.

In the second game, Augusta starter Joe Kurrasch won his fourth contest, going 5 2/3 innings, scattering five hits, walking two and striking out six.

In the third inning of game one, Jeff Reynolds led off with a double. Two outs later, the Gnats benefited from three straight walks to Eudy Pina, Brandon Nimmo and Maikis De La Cruz to score Reynolds. Then Cole Frenzel greeted relief pitcher Danny Sandbrink with a two-run single.

The GreenJackets scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Joseph Rapp hit his fifth home run of the season in the fourth inning and Alberto Robles had a one-out triple in the bottom of the sixth and scored on a ground out by Mitchell Delfino.

In the nightcap, Augusta scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with two out. Ben Turner started the rally with a double and Andrew Cain walked. Rando Moreno brought the first run home with a single to center. Then Shayne Payne doubled to left, scoring both Cain and Moreno. Delfino singled in the fourth run after Payne advanced on an error.

Nimmo went 2 for 3 in the second-game loss for Savannah.

Savannah opens up a series at Kannapolis tonight at 7:05.
