Adam Rubin of ESPN NY writes that Wilmer Flores will get some work at shortstop during spring training. The idea of playing Flores at the position was put to the side by the Mets after his 2011 season with S. Lucie (A+).

Rubin also shares that Terry Collins is not ready to make Ruben Tejada the everyday shortstop, even though there isn’t any other player ready to take over the role.

Ideally, it would be good if Flores has a great spring at the position and with his bat, possibly he will make it an easy decision for Collins. I still feel that Flores’ bat is so much better than Tejada, but the whole question is if he can handle the position.

The last time that Flores even played short was in 2011 with St. Lucie and in 129 games at the position, he had 20 errors and a .966 Fld% in 585 chances. Overall, he has played every position in the infield in his minor league career and holds a .963 Fld%.

The only other players to compete for shortstop are Omar Quintanilla and as Rubin writes, Terry Collins has named New Jersey native Anthony Seratelli as the most viable backup middle infielder at this point if Tejada is the starter.

So the question is who breaks camp with the team, is named the everyday shortstop and gives the Mets a better opportunity to win? That is the big question that is soon to be answered, unless TC decides otherwise.
