Savannah Sand Gnats left-hander Steven Matz was lifted from his most recent start after three innings of work thanks to a blister on his pitching hand. It was reported as minor, but the Long Island native has found himself placed on the disabled list.

The Mets selected Matz in the second round of the 2009 MLB first-year player draft out of Ward Melville High School on Long Island. The 22-year-old has pitched to a 2-2 record and 3.11 ERA with 41 strikeouts and 12 walks in 37.1 innings pitched in Savannah this year.

On the flip side, the Binghamton Mets activated Luis Mateo off the seven-day disabled list today. He had sat out since April 15th with an elbow strain.

He started 2013 with Advanced-A St. Lucie. After throwing 6.2 shutout innings and allowing four hits on two walks and nine strikeouts, he was promoted to Double-A.

His debut with the B-Mets wasn’t as good; he threw three innings and allowed four runs on six hits, three walks, and two strikeouts. That was the last time he went to the mound before getting activated today. Mateo was transferred back to St. Lucie, while Ryan Fraser goes from St. Lucie to the B-Mets. Right-hander Dylan Owen has also been placed on the disabled list with a right knee strain.
