Las Vegas 51s infielder T.J. Rivera was named the Pacific Coast League Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday. Rivera wins the award for the second time this season, and he was also the PCL Player of the Month in May.
Rivera’s 15 hits last week which included two home runs, were the most in professional baseball including the major leagues, and his eight extra-base hits tied for the best in Minor League Baseball.
The versatile infielder batted .517 (15-for-29), racked up 27 total bases, and boasted a 1.507 OPS, leading all of Triple-A in those categories.
Rivera’s solid week included some huge clutch moments. On August 6 vs. Fresno, he hit a three-run homer and a two-run double, the latter of which plated the game-winning runs in a 10-8 victory. On August 2 against El Paso, Rivera hit a go-ahead three-run home run. And on August 1 he ripped a game-tying single in what would be a 10-7 victory.
In his first full season at Triple-A Las Vegas, Rivera leads the league in batting average (.347), ranks third in RBI (80) and fourth in hits (128).
In six minor league seasons, the 27-year old Rivera has dominated at the plate in every level and he’s compiled a .323/.370/.423 batting line in over 600 games.
He was reportedly being considered for a promotion to the Mets last week, but the team opted for Ty Kelly.
The Mets have Rivera gaining some experience in left field of late, where the Mets could use a right-handed bat in their all left-handed hitting outfield.
This guy should be up here right now. However, if they intend to get him experience in the OF the next 7-10 days so he will be more comfortable, then do that, but either way, he needs to be up here ASAP.
