Taylor’s Six Sharp Innings Lead Savannah To 5-1 Win

Savannah starter Logan Taylor pitched six strong innings and Stefan Sabol ripped a two-run triple in a three-run sixth inning Thursday night as the Sand Gnats opened second half play in the Southern League with a 5-1 victory over the Lexington Legends.

Taylor gave up three hits, one run, walked two and struck out nine in improving his record to 1-1 in a combined four-hitter. He was ably backed up by relievers Hunter Carnevale, who went two scoreless innings while giving up a single hit, and Beck Wheeler, who closed out the ninth by facing the minimum.

The Sand Gnats, winners of the Southern Division in the first half of the season, got two runs in the fifth. Maikis De La Cruz singled home Eudy Pina, who had reached base after striking out on a wild pitch, and De La Cruz scored on a throwing error.

In the six, Chad Zurcher and Pina singled and came home on Sabol’s triple, and Sabol scored on a throwing error on the play.

The Legends scored their single run in the fourth inning on two singles and an RBI double by Bubba Starling.

Zucher, Sabol and Jeff Reynolds had two hits each in the victory.

The teams play again tonight at 7:05 p.m.
