According Mike Puma of the New York Post, the New York Mets are discussing promoting Columbia Fireflies outfielder Tim Tebow. The next level up for Tebow would be the Mets Advanced-A affiliate, the St. Lucie Mets.
The promotion would come after the South Atlantic League All-Star game on June 20, which the Fireflies are hosting at their beautiful Spirit Communications Park in Columbia, South Carolina.
Tebow, 29, is hitting .250/.330/.370 with four doubles, one triple, two home runs and 11 RBI. He has 29 strikeouts in 28 games and has played 18 games in left field with one error. The league average OPS for the SAL is currently .649 (Tebow at .700).
The former quarterback has looked better at the plate recently slashing .327/.413/.436 over his last 16 games.
Promoting Tebow to the St. Lucie Mets would certainly be a boost to attendance at First Data Field where he helped draw big crowds for the Instructional League. The Fireflies reported a boost of 36% in their April attendance with Tebow as the driving force behind the large increase.
The Fireflies led the SAL with an average of 5,103 fans per game in the month of April. Tebow has also boosted the attendance of road games by 92% according to a report by J.J. Cooper from Baseball America.
“The promotion would come after the South Atlantic League All-Star game…”
And when is that? Next week? Mid-June? July? it would be useful info for the article…
June 19th – 20th.
He’s playing better than out top OF prospect. I applaud him for what he’s done so far.
Thanks!
Since this was written, he’s gone 0-for-13 with six strike outs. His “hitting better of late” lasted all of two weeks. Overall his strike out rate has risen throughout the season, including as he was “hitting better of late.
The article does say June 20th.
Babe Ruth was known as the King of Strikeouts. He was known for his all or nothing batting style. He led the American League in strikeouts five times, and accumulated 1,330 of them in his career. In 2012, 136 players struck out 94 or more times.
Also remember all the guys that struck out had hit record home runs but also admitted using steroids like Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa.
With Tim it’s a gift from God and he is doing it naturally and the truth is that he is doing just fine for a man 29 yrs of age.
Babe Ruth struck out about (or less than) 20% of the time in each of those years and had about a .350 batting average during those five years while leading the major leagues HRs most of those years, and RBI in some of them.
Tebow is striking out 30% of the time on the year, 35% in May, and 37% over the last ten games, and hitting .220 while playing in A ball. So I’m not really sure what your point is.
