To follow up my initial post from yesterday, I figured it would be cool to continue looking at past draft selections today since this is the day those following the MLB draft have been waiting for. Once again, thank you to Ultimate Mets Database for having all of this information readily available at my finger tips. Here are some notable Mets players drafted in the past on June 6th:

Jon Matlack: 1st round (4th overall) of 1967 draft2013draft

82-81 record, 3.03 ERA, 1.20 WHIP in 1,448 IP

Gary Gentry: 3rd round of 1967 draft

41-42 record, 3.56 ERA, 1.26 WHIP in 789.1 IP

Hubie Brooks: 1st round (3rd overall) of 1978 draft

.267/.318/.372, 44 home runs, 269 RBIs in 654 games played

Dave Magadan: 2nd round of 1983 draft

.292/.391/.386, 21 home runs, 254 RBIs in 701 games played

Joe Smith: 3rd round of 2006 draft

9-5 record, 3.51 ERA, 1.40 WHIP in 107.2 innings pitched

Daniel Murphy: 13th round of 2006 draft

.291/.337/.429, 30 home runs, 220 RBIs in 525 games played

Jordany Valdespin: was signed as a free agent in 2007

.236/.289/.411, 11 home runs, 37 RBIs in 140 games played

Up and down this list, these names seem a lot more familiar, to me at least. Again, it’s nice to see the most recent selections and signings come to fruition. The Mets probably wish they had Smith in their current bullpen, but Murphy is putting together a nice year in his second full season playing second base. Valdespin has had his problems, but is still an exciting player, despite not getting ample playing time to show what he’s capable of.

I hope you’re ready for the draft!! Stay with MMN throughout the day and evening for up-to-the-minute coverage of who the Mets select. If you need a primer before the event is under way, Satish Ram has you covered.
