Earlier in the week, new Mets General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen has caused a stir by he suggesting his former client Tim Tebow could actually make the Mets Opening Day roster. Van Wagenen has since clarified his remarks to say they suggested something about Tebow’s drive as an individual than they were about the possibility of Tebow making the roster.

Specifically, Van Wagenen said, “If you say he can’t do something, he’s just going to work that much harder to prove you wrong.”

Certainly, there is an element of truth to that statement.  While many have been skeptical of Tebow’s ability to play baseball, Tebow has quieted some skeptics.  In his second professional season, Tebow improved his batting average, OBP, and slugging.  That feat was all the more impressive when you consider he did it at a much higher level.

Before breaking his hamate bone, Tebow would hit .340/.364/.434 in the Month of July.  If he were able to keep up that level of production and continue to improve the way he has, Tebow playing in the majors should not be completely ruled out.

If Tebow is to play in the Majors, it is not going to be on Opening Day.  In fact, Van Wagenen said Tebow was going to begin the season with Triple-A Syracuse.  With Syracuse, he should prove to be a draw for the Mets owned affiliate similar to the way he was with Columbia, St. Lucie, and Binghamton.  More important to Tebow, he will find himself that much closer to the Major Leagues.
