A non-profit called Advocates for Minor Leaguers sent out a press release on Friday announcing they are dedicating to helping minor league baseball players improve their working conditions.

Garrett Broshuis, former minor league player and currently an attorney, helped create the group, “This organization is long overdue. Even though they work in an industry with over $10 billion in annual revenue that is enjoying record profits, minor league baseball players are among the most poorly paid workers in America. Advocates for Minor Leaguers seeks to change that.”

Former Mets player Ty Kelly is one of the other co-founders. Kelly has spent parts of 11 seasons in the minor leagues and three in the majors, including two with the Mets.

Other co-founders include a long-time major leaguer that wishes to stay anonymous, long-time labor activist Bill Fletcher, former minor leaguer Matt Pare, Emmy-Award winning baseball documentary producer Lisa Raphael, and former Mets minor leaguer Raul Jacobson.

As noted in the press release, many minor leaguers are paid less than $7,500 per year, and their low wages regularly put them below the minimum wages required by law, and below the federal poverty line.

Emily Waldon of The Athletic is trying to help minor leaguers on by raising money for them and find them employment opportunities with baseball shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.
