Yesterday, Columbia Fireflies first baseman Jeremy Vasquez entered the game as a defensive substitution for Chad Spanberger in the fifth inning of the South Atlantic League All Star Game, and he would leave an impact on the game.

In the top of the ninth inning, Vasquez homered of Blake Battenfield to expand the South All-Stars lead over the North All-Stars to 9-6.  That would be the final score of the All Star Game as Vasquez recorded the final put out of the game in the bottom of the ninth.

Overall, Vasquez would have two plate appearances going 1-for-1 with a run, home run, RBI, and a walk.  With that performance, he certainly shined brightest amoung the six Fireflies who were named as All Stars.

Fireflies starter Joe Cavallaro received the nod to be the starting pitcher for the South, and he would allow one run on two hits in his one inning of work.

After the South had gained a lead, Steve Villines would appear with two outs in the seventh inning.  Villines would strike out the only batter he faced, Devon Fisher, to end the North’s two run rally and to help the South get out of the inning with an 8-5 lead.  As a result, Villines would be credited with a hold.

Catcher Scott Manea was 0-for-2 at the plate, and the North’s Laz Rivera would steal a base.  It was the only stolen base attempt made by the North in the game.

Fireflies closer Trey Cobb would enter with one out in the bottom of the ninth, and he would allow just one hit in his 0.2 innings of work as he closed out the 9-5 victory.

The only Firefly All Star to not make an appearance in the game was David Peterson, who was recently promoted to St. Lucie.
