It was the home finale for the St. Lucie Mets on Sunday as they faced the Fort Myers Miracle, the Class High-A affiliate of the Twins and they came away with the victory winning 5-1.

St. Lucie was lead by a dominant performance from Mets top pitching prospect David Peterson who might have thrown his best game in a St. Lucie uniform. Peterson threw seven innings allowing only two hits with one unearned run, a walk and three strikeouts. Below is video of all three strikeouts.

Early and often throughout the game, Peterson was inducing numerous groundouts mostly to the first base side mixing in his fastball and curveball with what I believe was some sprinkled in change ups. His fastball sat mostly 91-92 MPH per stadium radar gun while fighting through a tough and tired looking final inning in seventh topping 93 MPH recording his final out of the day throwing 101 pitches.

After not appearing to have full control of his curveball in the first two innings it was thereafter that Peterson showed off a solid arching 75-76 MPH hook which to batters eye appeared to start middle of the plate and just drop last second on the batters. He was moving his fastball around inside and outside to batters fighting to get ahead in counts throughout the day with a lot of soft contact allowed.

His pitch count took a hit off mainly two plate appearances. One from .363 hitting Twins prospect Alex Kirilloff and 2017 number one overall draft pick teenager Royce Lewis who had a marathon at-bat lasting about a dozen pitches before grounding out.  Below is video of the grueling at-bat for both with Peterson ultimately prevailing.

Overall, I came aware very impressed with Peterson who looked solid and better than when I saw him last month, showing more life on his fastball and less of that new age “exit velocity” given up to hitters throughout the game. Definitely an outing for him to build on going forward.

On the hitting side, the one star of the day was second baseman Blake Tiberi who may have had his best offensive day in a St. Lucie Mets uniform with three hits and two RBI to help Mets to victory. Below is video of his first hit of the day.

Another player with a big day at the plate was catcher Dan Rizzie who went 2-for-3 with a double, walk and 2 RBI. Rizzie has continued to make improvements offensively throughout the season, impressing the coaches and continuing to do well behind the plate.

Today was also a solid day for first baseman Jeremy Vazquez who made solid contact going 2-for-4 with a double in the victory and making numerous defensive plays fielding grounder after grounder hit off Peterson.

The other most news worthy player of the day was Brandon Nimmo. Brandon went 1-for-3 with a walk on the day, working counts and making contact as he always does. Nimmo also made a diving play defensively in the eighth which lead to the immediate removal of Brandon from the game appearing to be strictly as a precaution.

Live video of all of Brandon Nimmo at bats today.

It was a nice win for St. Lucie as they now hit the road for the rest of the season. Perhaps we will see one final start from David Peterson who looks poised to continue on with improvements and up the levels.
