Zach Lutz, Las Vegas 51’s

In his brief stint with the New York Mets last season, Lutz had six hits and two RBI’s in 20 AB’s.  He’s had an absolute torrid start to this season in Vegas, sporting a .500 batting average with nine RBI’s already to his name in 18 AB’s.  Through his first six games, he’s also clubbed a home run and has eight walks up against only three strikeouts.

Rafael Montero, Las Vegas 51’s

Montero is completely undermining the hitter-friendly environment that is Cashman Field in Las Vegas.  Through two starts, he has a win under his belt to go along with a 2.45 ERA and a 14:1 strikeout to walk ratio in 11 innings pitched.  His 3 earned runs were all his his second start in which he tossed five innings but also struck out 9 of his 14 batters.  Montero continues to appear major league ready and it’s only a matter of time before the young righthander gets an opportunity with the big club.

Eric Campbell, Las Vegas 51’s

After a very impressive spring with the Mets, Campbell has carried his success into the start of his season with the 51’s.  Playing both first and second base in his first six games, he’s put up a .360 AVG with three doubles, one home run and seven RBI’s in 25 AB’s.  If Campbell continues to hit, it will be hard for the Mets to look past him as a bench option later in the season.

Who’s Not

Josh Edgin, Las Vegas 51’s

During the spring, the Mets were considering Edgin for a bullpen spot in the majors but his performance landed him in Vegas to start the season.  He hasn’t done anything to prove the Mets brass wrong as he’s given up five earned runs in 2.1 innings pitched stretched out over four appearances.  In that time, he’s given up three hits and three walks, while his WHIP sits at 2.57.  He’ll have to make noticeable improvements in his command to get a shot at cracking the big league bullpen any time soon.

Matt Reynolds, Binghamton Mets

Reynolds got the opportunity to play a few games with the Mets during spring training but did not impress much.  He’s continued his unimpressive play into his first 17 AB’s of the season with the B-Mets.  He only has 2 singles and a double in his first five games, striking out four times and walking once.

Jeff Walters, Las Vegas 51’s

Pacific Coast League hitters are eating up Walters as he’s already given up seven hits and five earned runs in 2.2 innings pitched to start the season.  It’s also worth noting he only has one strikeout in those 2.2 innings, which is not something you want to see from a late inning reliever.  His fastball looked unimpressive at best during the spring, sitting at 89-92 mph.  It looks like hitters are having no trouble barreling it up at the moment.
