Wilmer Flores’ Heat Map

Before Travis d’Arnaud, there was Wilmer Flores…our top position player prospect for many years. Flores has finally hit the MLB and has picked up where he left off in Triple-A, showing impressive plate coverage. The above heat map was provided by Mark Simon and I wanted to take a second to comment on it.

It’s natural to see a right-handed hitter demonstrate hitting prowess on pitches on the inside corner of the plate, but you can see that Flores so far has been able to make solid contact even in an area that one would consider him being jammed. It’s a representation of his quick hands and bat control at the plate. What further accentuates his ability to control the bat, however, is the fact there is a hot zone on the outside corner of the plate. Remember Flores’ first MLB HR? That’s right…an opposite field home run. He has no problems going the opposite way — and doing so with power.

He has only missed on 12% of his swings so far as well, which is also good news. Honestly, I haven’t been this excited about a Mets position player making his debut in years, so I’m really happy to see him adjusting well to MLB pitching.
