According to Marc Carig of Newsday, Mets manager Terry Collins said Friday that he would like to get Wilmer Flores some chances at second base during his time with the team.

The 22-year-old Flores is currently filling in at third base for the injured David Wright, but could increase his chances to stick with the big club if he shows he can adequately handle second base as well and add to his versatility.

Good move by the Mets who most certainly are well aware of what Flores is capable of including handling second base where’s played most of the 2013 season. Scouts and Mets coaches and executives have all said that his defense at second has improved. One scout, after watching Flores for three games in Reno, called his defensive shortcomings have been greatly exaggerated.

Flores has five RBI through his first four major league games. He was hitting .321 with 15 homers prior to his call-up this season.
