Wilmer-Flores-400x279

Adam Rubin of ESPN New York writes that Terry Collins said Wilmer Flores will start at shortstop for a third time in spring training today, although the manager suggested that is unrelated to dissatisfaction with Ruben Tejada.

On Monday, Tejada went 1-for-3 with two strikeouts and is hitting .120 (3-for-25) so far this spring training.

“I want to play him [Flores] at shortstop,” says Collins. “He’s gone to this [fitness camp] thing this winter to where he worked very, very hard on his agility. I want to see it in action. The best place to see it is out in the middle of the field.”

So with only two weeks left in the spring season, Flores has only started twice at short without including today’s game.  If the concern was for him to be looked at, then I would think that he should have been out at the position from the start of the Grapefruit League season, so that he could have become accustomed again and worked out any rust that he may have had.

It just seems unfair that he hasn’t gotten a better look and adequate time there. Hopefully all of this will be cleared up very soon and my solution to this ongoing issue; just put the kid out there and let him play.
