New York Mets outfield prospect Wuilmer Becerra had shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum last July that ended his 2016 season.
Becerra told Ed Delany of MMN on Monday that his shoulder feels great and that he hasn’t had any problems yet in his rehab.
Becerra, 22, was added to the 40-man roster this offseason to protect him from the Rule 5 draft despite the surgery that hindered his 2016 power numbers.
The right-handed right fielder slashed .312/.342/.393 with 17 doubles and only one home run in 65 games. Of those 65 games, he was able to play just 13 games in the field because of the pain in his shoulder.
Becerra showed off his power potential in 2015 when he hit 27 doubles and nine home runs while playing his home games at the extremely pitcher friendly Grayson Stadium. Of course, Becerra was the final piece the Mets received as part of the R.A. Dickey trade along with John Buck, Noah Syndergaard and Travis d’Arnaud.
In our Top 100 Prospect rankings here at MMN we placed Becerra at number 11, but he could easily jump in the top 10 if he proves his shoulder is healthy.
Mike awesome article, do you know where Beccera will be starting the year?
No, but I would guess a month or so in St. Lucie then Binghamton where he would have started the season if not for the injury.
Awesome thanks for all the info like always!
Another very nice prospect in the Mets system with the potential to be a great prospect.
Time for him to put it all together….success at bingo will go a long way to moving him up the charts.
If Beccera is healthy, he could be top 3 in next year’s rankings. Has all the tools and he likes to show them off. Keith Law’s next “tool shed” on the Mets.
I have always had a feeling since researching him after the trade that this kid was going to be an absolute stud.
If he has a monster year at bingo and reaches Vegas in 2017, we will likely see Conforto as a full time centerfielder in the future to make room for Beccera.
Or put Becerra in CF and keep Conforto in RF
Agreed in principle, but if Rosario and Smith are still eligible, it’s hard to see him leap frog both Szapucki and Dunn to claim that last spot (in addition to the rest currently between him and the top of the list). But again, I agree with your general sentiments that if he re-establishes his health this year and picks back up where he left off pre-injury, to me he puts himself squarely into the group with Szapucki. Dunn Lindsay and Gimenez (with Alonso and Molina possibly joining that group with strong campaigns this year) as the next group of elite prospects.
