Should we start rooting for a bad winter for Becerra…at least until after the Rule V Draft passes??
What a slide, that looked like a Murphy play on both ends of it.. hahaha!
Really is a weird spot right for fans? I think we should root for good winter because the chances of him getting drafted and sticking are slim. I’m really hoping he just doesn’t get drafted.
There are just too many bad teams, with terrible minor league systems that I could see taking him. But yeah, it’s a gamble worth taking – if for nothing else he’s so far away, and it’s not worth wasting his options now.
Has any hitter from low A ever been a rule 5 selection Henry?
Hmmm. No idea. I’m guessing there has to be though, right??
The Sally League is pretty far down there and while a 3rd catcher or a LHP could be utilized sparingly a 5th OFer is going to have to play some so hopefully we are OK here.
Yup. That’s the hope. Thing is, for a team trying to secure a top 2-3 pick in the following year’s draft as the rebuild the organization, giving him 5th OFer playing time is not that crazy. I mean at worst it’s a difference of what 1-2 wins than a “normal” 5th OF??
That is certainly an issue but you still can’t put a guy out there and see him strike out 50% of the time or hit .075 or something.
A corner OFer is going to have to hit because the starting corners need 15 games off before injuries.
Well in that case, they’d send him back, and we’ll be fine. But taking him to trot him out there once a week and see how he does?? it might be worth a shot. Wait, he loses an option year if he’s selected right??
The option year is to keep him in the minors so if he spends the whole year in the Majors he still has 3 option years remaining Henry.
That’s what I thought. Some were saying the Mets can’t put him on 40 now because it would use up an option year. But if a team picks him the option year gets used up anyway. The question then was always, is the risk of not putting him on worth it?? I guess we’ll see.
Yeah Henry the option wouldn’t get used up if he stays all year in the Majors as a rule 5.
It also doesn’t get used up if he stays in our minors all year without being put on the 40.
Hopefully he is not picked, has a bang up year in A+, gets a taste of AA and is added to the 40 a year from now.
MLBTR had a piece yesterday I think about who the Phillies might take, and it was tools guys with much longer track records. I’m confident Becerra stays, at least right now, but until the draft comes and goes, it’ll be a little uneasy. As for his timeline, I think mid season 2017, at the latest.
If all goes well in A+, AA and AAA.
I will be too. Long shot but still sweating it out.
Yup. Sounds about right.
