Savannah 5, Augusta 1

Savannah right-hander Gabriel Ynoa won his eighth straight decision and light-hitting catcher Jeff Glenn smacked a two-run double to key a big sixth inning as the Sand Gnats defeated the Augusta GreenJackets 5-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

Savannah (2-4 second half, 45-30 overall) snapped a four-game losing streak. The Gnats return home today to begin a four-game set with the Rome Braves — the Class A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. Game time is 7:05 p.m.

Glenn made sure the Gnats returned to Savannah on a positive note. With Augusta leading 1-0 in the sixth inning, Glenn, who is hitting .204, had a two-out double to left field to drive in Nelfi Zapata and Cole Frenzel.

Phillip Evans followed with a single to bring in Glenn.

The offensive outburst was all the 20-year-old Ynoa needed. The 6-foot-2, 158-pound all-star went six innings, allowing five hits and one run while lowering his earned run average to 2.68.

Savannah iced the game in the eighth when Frenzel doubled and Jeff Reynolds walked. They moved up on a wild pitch and scored on Chad Zurcher’s two-out single to right.

Gnats Hunter Carnevale and Paul Sewald combined for three scoreless and hitless innings in relief.

Augusta starter Justin Schumer pitched five shutout innings, but relievers Brandon Farley and Ian Gardeck surrendered all five Savannah runs.
