Savannah 8, Augusta 1

Game one of the three game series between the Savannah Sand Gnats and the Augusta Greenjackets was played in front of 1,297 fans Tuesday evening at Grayson Stadium. Savannah won 8-1.

The Sand Gnats bats were hot as every player had at least one hit and Maikis De La Cruz had three hits. Savannah scored three runs in the first inning. Back to back walks to Chad Zurcher and Brandon Nimmo, followed by a hit by De La Cruz, loaded the bases. A run scored when Cole Frenzel walked. A sac fly to left by Eudy Piña scored the second run. A bunt single by Jeff Reynolds scored the third run. In the third inning, Piña led off with a home run over the left field fence, his 9th of the year, to give Savannah a 4-0 lead. Sand Gnats scored a run in the 4th inning, a run in the 6th inning, and 2 runs in the 8th inning.

Augusta scored their run in the 8th inning. Trevor Brown doubled, moved to third on a single by Matt Duffy, and scored when catcher Ben Turner hit into a double play.

He gave up six hits, one BB, and struck out 5. Estarlin Morel retired the only batter he faced. Tyler Vanderheiden pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowed one run on three hits and two BB. Closer Beck Wheeler pitched 1 1/3 inning, striking out two and earned his 8th save of the season.
