Adam Rubin of ESPN New York shared the news that Zack Wheeler, MMN’s top-ranked prospect, is the 15th-best prospect in all of Major League Baseball, according to Keith Law.

Law’s updated top-25 list is only available for ESPN Insiders, with Oscar Tavares, outfield prospect for the St. Louis Cardinals, gaining top honors.

This distinction is nothing new for the young right-handed hurler. Since being taken by the San Francisco Giants in the first round (sixth overall pick) of the 2009 first-year player draft, Wheeler has seen himself grace plenty of these lists.

Prior to the start of 2010, Baseball America ranked Wheeler the 49th best prospect in baseball, and he’s seen his stock rise to #11 this season. Also, MLB.com ranked him as the 28th best prospect prior to 2012, and he moved up 20 spots to eighth before this season got underway.

A promotion is on the horizon for Wheeler, but he struggled in his most recent start for Triple-A Las Vegas yesterday. He lasted only four innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits (two homers), three walks, and four strikeouts. To see what Satish Ram had to say about yesterday’s start, you can take a look right here. It was his second start since missing one with a brief DL-stint; he’s 3-1 with a 4.13 ERA, 53 strikeouts and 23 walks in 52.1 innings pitched so far in 2013.

His uneven starts the last two times he’s taken the mound could justify the Mets holding off until they’re sure he’ll miss the Super-Two cutoff, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they decide to promote him anyway. We’ll soon find out what the organization plans to do for one of their prized possessions.
