The Mets did not sign D.J. Johnson, their 21st round selection in the 2010 draft, but they did sign their 20th round selection that year – First Baseman Luke Stewart out of the University of Alabama-Birmingham. The 602nd overall selection lasted two years in the organization. Luke has been previously drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 42nd round of the 2006 draft. Luke’s younger brother Brock was chosen by the Mets in the 40th round of the 2010 draft, but did not sign.
Luke began his professional career in 2010 with the Kingsport Mets
(Rookie) of the Appalachian League. He appeared in 58 games, batting .255 with eight home runs and 31 RBI. He had 216 AB, scored 38 runs, had 55 hits with 12 doubles and a triple. He had an OBP of .353 and slugged .431. He walked 23 times and struck out 68 times.
In 2011, Luke was promoted to the Brooklyn Cyclones (A-) of the New York Penn League, but struggled before returning to Kingsport, where he remained for the rest of the season. In 17 games with Brooklyn, he hit .176, a home run and five RBI. After returning to Kingsport, Luke hit .234 with six home runs and 28 RBI in 42 games. On the season, Luke appeared in 59 games and hit a combined .218, with 30 runs scored, nine doubles, three triples, seven home runs, 33 RBI, 32 walks, 63 strike outs in 188 at bats. He also had an OBP of .330 and slugged .410.
Luke was released by the Mets at the end of the 2012 Spring Training season.
In his professional career, Luke appeared in 117 games, batting .238 with 15 home runs and 64 RBI. In 404 at bats, he scored 68 runs, with 96 hits, 21 doubles, four triples, 55 walks, and struck out 131 times. He had a career OBP OF .342 and slugged .421.
