The Mets have selected 25-year old righthander Seth Rosin from the Phillies organization.
The Phillies surprisingly didn’t protect Seth Rosin who went 9-6 with a 4.33 ERA and 1.22 WHIP last season for Triple-A Reading.
Rosin was promising with the Giants with great command and can start or relieve; he led the Cal league in saves before they put him back to starter. “Big strong reliable pitcher that throws gas.”
The Mets didn’t lose anyone in the MLB phase of Rule 5 Draft so Cory Vaughn, Chase Huchingson, Joel Carreno all remain in the organization.
In the minor league phase of the draft, the Mets selected RHP Jon Velasquez from the Twins organization. Last season for Double-A New Britain, the 28-year old righthander posted a 1.95 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in 73.2 innings of relief.
Update:
The Mets lost three players in the minor league phase of the draft. The Astros selected LHP Carlos Vasquez, the Twins selected Mets’ RHP James Fuller, and the Nationals selected RHP Martires Arias from Double-A Binghamton.
Thoughts from David C.
I am very happy to see that no impact players were selected in the draft. I know that stock piling good players only means that eventually something will need to give, because their are only enough spots on the big club. 2014 will be an exciting season with the Mets farm teams, there should be exciting baseball being played. I am also glad that Vaughn was not selected, because I feel he is a special player that was taught the game the right way and will be a very good major league ball player in the near future. So it will be good to be able to watch him continue to develop in a Mets uniform.
What can you tell me about the 3 minor league arms we lost during the minor league phase? Anything we should be upset about?
Fuller pitched pretty good for st lucie last year, but I wouldn’t worry about losing him. He’s reliever, and he is pretty old for his level.
I really don’t know a lot about the other guys though.
Jonathan Velasquez pitched last year for the Indepependent League Camden Riversharks (Atlantic League) where he was 6-2, with a 1.92 ERA in 61 appearances.
He did not pitch for the Twins Double-A New Britain team. The Twins signed him this off-season and he is currently playing winter ball in Puerto Rico.
