Cory Vaughn is making the most of his opportunities at the Mets spring camp this season, but with the Mets outfield a logjam going into the 2014 season, any chance of Vaughn breaking camp with the club is slim to none.
Vaughn is having another strong spring and if he plays this well in Las Vegas (AAA), he should be favored to make his debut sometime this summer. Now that may seem a bit far fetched, since the Mets do have other viable candidates in the outfield, but Vaughn also deserves to receive the same consideration.
Vaughn, 25, is no stranger to big league spring training, as he has participated since 2011 and in each season he has played well, actually he is a combined .435/.500/.783, with two home runs and has 10 RBI in 23 at bats. Now so far that hasn’t led him to his major league debut, but since he was signed in 2010, he has continued to make progress through the Mets farm system.
In 2013, the outfielder split time between St Lucie (A+) and Binghamton (AA) and combined he batted .252/.348/.400, with 10 home runs and 54 runs batted in. In five games this spring, he is batting .444/.545/.889 and with less than two weeks to play before the regular season starts, he has an opportunity to continue to show that he deserves to be considered when rosters expand in September, or maybe even sooner.
There is no guarantee that the Mets current outfield situation will be a lock all season. The mainstays should definitely be Curtis Granderson and in my mind Juan Lagares, but who knows how the season will play out and which player will step up, especially with Chris Young and Eric Young Jr directly effecting any playing time to be considered to any other player.
The Mets have other viable outfield options like Andrew Brown, Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Cesar Puello, and Matt den Dekker, and each have had a very good spring with the bat, so no telling what will happen once the season starts.
The outfield situation for the Mets is almost similar to their pitching situation, where it will take an injury or lackluster play by the starters for anyone to be able to crack the lineup. But there are always opportunities to showcase talent and that is what Vaughn is doing now.
The upcoming 2014 minor league season will be a very exciting one to watch, especially with more than a handful of prospects playing their hearts out for the chance to get back to the bigs or in Vaughn and Puello’s case, make their big league debuts.
But as for Vaughn, he is taking every opportunity they give him and making the best of it, and soon enough it will all work itself out.
