The Mets did an excellent job during the July 2nd, 2015 international signing period getting two of the top players available in shortstops Andres Gimenez and Gregory Guerrero.
Gimenez was ranked second by Baseball America in the class and received a $1.2 million signing bonus. Guerrero, nephew of Vlad, signed for $1.5 million after being ranked the #6 prospect by BA.
Generally all you hear about on July 2nd is the big name prospects signing but talent can still be found in lower level guys that sign for small bonuses. For example the Mets signed Rafael Montero for only $80,000 in 2011 and Jose Reyes received just $22,000 in 1999.
Here is a list of players previously unreported that have signed with Mets:
- Shervyen Newton – Ht: 6’3 Wt: 160 Bats/Throws: S/R Born: 4/29/99 (16). Infielder that was born in Tilburg, Netherlands.
- Pedro Nolasco – Ht: 6’1 Wt: 180 Bats/Throws: L/R Born: 5/16/97 (18). Outfielder from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
- Miguel Pinedo – Ht: 6’2 Wt: 167 Bats/Throws: R/R Born: 4/19/98 (17). Pitcher from Cartagena, Colombia where Dilson Herrera was born as well.
- Brian Campusano – Ht: 6’2 Wt: 180 Bats/Throws: R/R Born: 3/26/96 (19). Pitcher from Santo Domingo, Dominic Republic.
- Miguel Ramirez – Ht: 6’1 Wt: 140 Bats/Throws: R/R Born: 3/10/97 (18). Pitcher from Sanchez Ramirez, Dominican Republic.
- Andres Regnault – Ht: 5’11 Wt: 200 Bats/Throws: R/R Born: 12/21/98 (17). Catcher from Caracas, Venezuela.
It was reported on July 30th that the Mets had signed 6’3, 200 pound outfielder Edinson Valdez from the Dominican Republic. He is from the Guerrero Academy where Gregory trained as well.
Earlier this offseason, we unearthed the Mets had signed Colombian prospects David Lozano (infielder) and Jorge Martinez (catcher) which you can read about here.
Standing 6’3″ at age 16 I am going to guess corner IF, if not now than in the near future
I was actually looking forward to a little info on this 16 yr old kid, guess I got very little info on him!!!
Very limited info out there are him, I am working on trying to get some more. Tough to get with guys who don’t receive big bonuses.
Must be a real good reason to sign this guy at 16, any info would be appreciated. But do we have 16 yr old camp in Europe.. lol! JK.
Most signings are guys at 16, and the Dutch have become involved in baseball as of late. So have other countries in europe
Thanks Michael. Previously, I couldn’t find out on the Google BA links who else the Mets signed in IFA last season besides the big 2. I guess maybe the Mets went somewhat over their IFA draft bonus pool $$$ last season even though they traded for some more IFA cap space with the Angels?
Michael, any dirt or buzz regarding 6’3, 200 pound OFer Edinson Valdez?
Supposedly good power potential, that is about all I have.
Ya there is very little info at all on these guys, I have a feeling none of them got substantial bonuses. If I had to guess I would say Newton, Lozano, and Valdez got the next 3 bonus size wise.
Thanks Michael.
