Before the New York Mets fell to the Miami Marlins on Sunday at Citi Field, the organization welcomed their first overall pick, Dominic Smith, to the ballpark. The left-handed first baseman from Serra High School was taken by the Amazins with their 11th overall pick.

After staying for the entire 20-inning affair on Saturday, Smith went into the clubhouse to get dressed for batting practice before Sunday’s finale to show off the sweet swing that convinced the Mets to take him with their top pick. Smith, who comes from Los Angeles, has been drawing comparisons to another LA left-handed hitter New York drafted with their top pick: Darryl Strawberry.

The 6’0″ high school senior had a great time at Citi Field, as Mets GM Sandy Alderson stood by the home dugout to watch Smith take some BP. As for how it felt? It sounds like everything is still sinking in for Smith.

It’s kind of surreal. I’m just happy to be here, I’m glad to come to New York, my new home.

Like anyone else, he also noticed how large Citi Field is:

Yeah, it’s a big park. I’ve just got to keep working everyday to get better. I’m just very excited to be here.

I’m really happy with this pick, and even more happy to see how excited Smith was when he officially became the newest member of the organization. In case you missed his reaction, here it is:

Hopefully, it won’t be too long before we see Smith taking BP again at Citi Field, but as a major leaguer.
