Lucie Logistics: Four St. Lucie All-Stars, Maron Heating Up, Taijeron Promoted

Worth noting: After having a whopping eight players earn nominations to the 2012 Florida State League All-Star Game, the St. Lucie Mets will send just four players to the showcase this year, with Aderlin Rodriguez being added earlier today to stand alongside Dustin Lawley and T.J. Rivera. But among that talented group is prized pitching jewel Noah Syndergaard, who could receive a promotion to Double-A Binghamton after the exhibition.

The organization is hoping the lanky right-hander can follow the track of another talented prospect who represented St. Lucie the in the 2011 version: Matt Harvey. The 6-foot-6 Syndergaard, hailed as the second-best pitching prospect behind only Zack Wheeler by MMN, has mirrored some of Harvey’s numbers from his brief run with St. Lucie.

Harvey began his professional career in Advanced Single-A after a standout junior season at the University of North Carolina and posted a 2.37 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 3.83 K/BB ratio over 14 starts (76 innings) before moving to Binghamton in mid-June. Syndergaard, who was selected out of high school just 31 picks after Harvey in the 2010 MLB Draft, has produced a 2.81 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 3.93 K/BB ratio during his first round of Advanced Single-A over 11 starts (57.2 innings). The 20-year-old has also kept the ball in the park more than Harvey, permitting just one home run compared to five by the current ace of the parent club.

Surging in the batter’s box: Catcher Cam Maron. Despite playing just three games with St. Lucie last week before his transfer, you could make a case for outfielder Travis Taijeron to maintain this spot. But Maron has improved his offensive production recently and notched three hits in Sunday’s series finale at Jupiter — his first such performance since April 16. The Long Island native has reached base safely in each of his past 11 games, collecting 11 hits and 11 walks for a .333 batting average and .500 on-base percentage during that stretch.

Surging on the mound: Reliever Carlos Vazquez. It’s only been two games, but Vazquez seems to have quickly rediscovered his earlier form with St. Lucie. The lefty, who was recalled from Brooklyn last week, has worked 3.1 scoreless innings for the Mets, yielding three hits and striking out three batters. Vazquez was nearly perfect during his first run in Advanced Single-A this season as he tossed 6.2 innings without surrendering a run and allowing just three hits with five strikeouts.

Number to remember: 2. Following an impressive power display last week that likely spearheaded Travis Taijeron‘s promotion to Double-A, the Mets’ bats fell silent during their three-game series at Jupiter. St. Lucie mustered only two extra-base hits during the divisional matchup — both coming in the series finale — and racked up just eight total runs, resulting in a 1-2 record. Coincidentally, the team’s last home run came last Monday against Lakeland by Taijeron.
