UPDATE: Sources have told Marc Carig of Newsday the Mets have agreed to a deal with 11th overall pick in the 2013 MLB draft, Dominic Smith.
The deal is expected to announced officially sometime today. Baseball America has the assigned slot value for Smith’s position in the draft to be $2,840,300, but according to Jim Callis, the two sides agreed to an under-slot deal of $2.6 million.
Upon the completion of the deal, Smith, a first baseman out of southern California, is expected to join the GCL Mets in rookie ball.
June 12th, 5:23 pm: Sources told Matt Ehalt of ESPN New York that Dominic Smith is close to finalizing a deal with the Mets. The 17-year-old first-round pick will have one more doctor appointment at home in Los Angeles before officially signing.
The terms of the deal are set, Smith said. Adam Rubin reported he’d likely be starting his Mets career in the Gulf Coast League.
According to Baseball America, the number 11 slot in the draft looks to be approximately $2.8 million. MLB Trade Rumors also report Smith is being advised by the MVP Sports Group.
