The South Atlantic League All-Star game is set to take place tomorrow in Lakewood, New Jersey. Kevin Plawecki and Jayce Boyd are making the trip to start the ballgame, and Brandon Nimmo is a reserve. The Savannah Sand Gnats have one of the best pitching staffs in the Sally League this season, as Gabriel Ynoa and Bret Mitchell were selected to join the All-Star festivities, as well.
Ynoa has had a wonderful season, and added to it yesterday in Savannah’s 8-0 win against Greenville. He went five shutout innings, allowing only three hits, no walks, and six strikeouts. That brings his season totals to an 8-2 record, 2.77 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 63 strikeouts, and nine walks in 74.2 innings pitched.
Since he threw yesterday, he won’t be participating in the All-Star game. Teammate Beck Wheeler has been selected to take his spot on the roster. Like most of the Gnats pitching staff, he’s also having a stellar season in Savannah. The right-hander out of UC Santa Barbara has an 0-3 record, but owns a 1.65 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, 40 strikeouts, and seven walks in 27.1 innings pitched. He’s appeared in 20 games in 2013, and is second to Mitchell in saves (six) and games finished (13).
Congratulations on the All-Star nod, Beck! Everyone will get a glimpse of the amount of talent on this year’s Gnats squad.
