In a pre-game ceremony before tomorrow’s game against the Atlanta Braves, the New York Mets will be honoring this year’s Sterling Award winners:
Organizational Player of the Year – 1B Dominic Smith
Previous Awards: 2016 Binghamton Mets Player of the Year, 2015 St. Lucie Mets Player of the Year
2017 MiLB Stats: 114 G, 500 PA, 457 AB, 77 R, 151 H, 34 2B, 2 3B, 16 HR, 76 RBI, SB, CS, .330/.386/.519
2017 MLB Stats: 42 G, 159 PA, 148 AB, 15 R, 31 H, 6 2B, 7 HR, 22 RBI, .209/.258/.392
MMN Rank: 2
Even with a hot finish to the season last year, there were still questions about Smith’s ability to hit for power. Smith largely answered those questions this year powered by an impressive July. This season, Smith set personal bests for runs, hits, doubles, triples, homers, and slugging percentage. He did this while playing an impressive defensive first base. Overall, Smith entered this year as a top prospect, and he ended it by perhaps being the most improved making him a worthy choice as the player of the yeaer.
Organizational Pitcher of the Year – RHP Corey Oswalt
2017 MiLB Stats: 12-5, 2.28 ERA, 24 G, 24 GS, 2 CG, SHO, 134.1 IP, 119 K, 1.176 WHIP
MMN Rank: 14
Oswalt was the breakout star of the 2017 Mets minor leagues. Not only did he emerge as a staff ace for a Binghamton club that went to the postseason, Oswalt was named the top pitcher in the Eastern League. His being named the top starters is of little surprise when you consider he started the All Star Game, and he had the best ERA in the league. Oswalt would also finish second in wins and sixth in strikeouts. When you dominate a higher level like Double-A, you have more than earned the title of being the Mets top minor league pitcher.
