According to Jim Callis of Baseball America, the Mets have agreed to terms with their fifth-round draft pick, Jared King. He’s a college outfielder from Kansas State that could end up being slotted as a center fielder, and has a good bat while also being a switch hitter. King signed with New York for $450K, which is about $119K over-slot for his position in the draft.
Coming out of college, some of King’s best attributes are his patience and approach at the plate. While Callis says he has some potential for pop in his bat, it doesn’t seem like there is elite power coming down the pike for him. However, he has the ability to square up a ball well that could lead to decent power, has average speed, and is a hard worker.
The Ohio-native was projected in some areas to go in the second round, so this could end up being a steal for New York, considering his work ethic.
Here’s a look at the newest member of the Mets organization:

Matt,
Why are the Mets going overslot on college seniors? They have done it with King and others. That is not true Moneyball and does not provide extra dollars to sign all of the high school pitchers they drafted .
