Two months into the season, Baseball America has updated their Top 100, and the headline with respect to the Mets is slugging first baseman Peter Alonso finally being included in the rankings.

Through Alonso’s first 51 games of the season for Double-A Binghamton, he is hitting .339/.461/.627 with nine doubles, 14 homers, and 44 RBI.

This level of production and the adjustments necessary to bring him to this level had Baseball America rank him as the 82nd best prospect. In ranking him here, Baseball America concluded, “his power will play in the big leagues, perhaps in the second half of 2018, whether as a regular or a platoon masher.”

Given his production, it may surprise some Alonso is not the highest rated Mets prospect. That honor goes to Andres Gimenez, who moved up nine spots on Baseball America’s rankings.

With Gimenez now being ranked 74th overall, Baseball America lauds his baseball instincts and believe he will continue to develop saying:

Described as a “ball of dynamite” by one Mets official, Gimenez has a shorter, thicker build than many shortstops but compensates with twitchy athleticism. Scouts expect him to impact the ball more frequently as his body matures and he gains strength in his 20s.

So far this season, Gimenez has improved every aspect of his game, and it is showing in his stats. Through 43 games for St. Lucie, Gimenez is hitting .281/.351/.425 with 10 doubles, three triples, two homers, and 13 RBI. He’s also set a new career high with 15 stolen bases.

One mild surprise in these rankings is the omission of 2017 first round draft pick David Peterson from the list.

In seven starts this year for Columbia, Peterson is 1-3 with a 2.03 ERA, 1.015 WHIP, and a 7.9 K/9.

If Peterson keeps pitching this well, it is possible he joins both Gimenez and Alonso on a future Baseball America update to this list.
