MMO‘s Logan Barer reports the New York Mets will promote 1B Peter Alonso and INF Jeff McNeil to Triple-A Las Vegas.
Earlier this week, Sandy Alderson said once Alonso was promoted to Triple-A, the team was not going to demote him. This could be a clear indication the team is prepared to give Dominic Smith a long look in the majors.
Alonso, 23, is hitting .315/.442/.574 with 11 doubles, 15 homers, and 52 RBI.
With respect to McNeil, Alderson had not given an indication a promotion for him would be coming as quickly as it was for Alonso.
With Asdrubal Cabrera ailing, Luis Guillorme struggling at the plate, and the Mets contemplating having Jose Reyes retire, this does put McNeil a step closer to the majors.
McNeil, 26, is hitting .329/.405/.633 with 16 doubles, three triples, 14 homers, and 43 RBI.
At the moment, no corresponding moves have been announced for either Binghamton or Las Vegas.
Overall, it will be interesting to see if Alonso and McNeil can continue hitting st this level in the more hitter friendly Pacific Coast League.
