The New York Mets have a shooting star in their midst. At All-Star Weekend in Washington, DC, Peter Alonso, MLB Pipeline‘s 69th ranked MLB prospect, is garnering some very positive attention.
In group batting practice on Sunday for the 2018 Futures Game, Alonso, 23, stood out among some of the most highly-touted young players in MiLB.
According to J.J. Cooper of Baseball America, the Mets’ first base prospect showed “the most impressive raw power” during his session. Cooper had more praise to lay upon the power-hitting Alonso.
“…Alonso was the standout among the standouts. He cleared the left-field stands with one home run. Another landed at the top of the stands in left-center field, bouncing onto the concourse.”
As anyone who’s ever been to Nationals Park in Washington D.C. will tell you, those spots he’s describing are a very long way from home plate.
During the Futures Game on Sunday afternoon, Peter Alonso put on another impressive performance, crushing a two-run home run that went over the foul pole in left, drawing a prolonged screaming fit from Team USA manager, Torii Hunter.
According to Mike Petriello of MLB.com, the exit velocity on Alonso’s home run was a staggering 113.6 MPH.
Mets top prospect Andres Gimenez went 0-for-2 for the World roster in the game.
