MMN Recap: Dibrell Dominates In Final Start Of Season

Las Vegas (70-69) 5, Sacramento (55-84) 3  Box Score

In their second to last game ever as the Las Vegas 51s, the team won to ensure that they’d finish at at least a .500 record for the season. Guillorme, who is batting .343 over his last ten games, swung the bat well all night, while Alonso hit a couple balls hard but had nothing to show for it after a strong first game of September the night before. Borenstein continued his solid campaign which recently won him team MVP, and Kivlehan continued his monstrous power surge which has been going on for over a month now. Bryce Brentz also homered in the tight win.

Coming off a complete game shutout, the PCL strikeout leader Gagnon had another great start. While he didn’t dominate with strikeouts, he kept River Cats hitters off balance all night. With one on and two outs in the eighth, Regnault came in and immediately gave up a two-run homer to tie the game. He lucked into getting the win after the 51s scored three in the bottom of the eighth. He came back out for the ninth, but Bautista replaced him after a leadoff double. Bautista has been inconsistent this year, but he looked sharp last night as he used his unpredictable fastball-slider combination to fool hitters and keep them guessing as he struck out the side to finish it off.

Portland (62-76) 7, Binghamton (64-75) 4  Box Score

The Rumble Ponies only had eight baserunners in the game, but went 2-for-4 with runners in scoring position and were able to push across four runs. Terdoslavich continued his stretch of excellent hitting with a two extra base hit game. Over his last 10 games, Terdoslavich is hitting .341 with four home runs. Andres Gimenez has just two hits in his last 20 at bats.

Kilome had his worst start since joining the Mets organization and broke a streak of 10 straight starts in which he allowed three earned runs or less. After giving up a 2-run homer in the first inning, Kilome would settle in until the sixth inning, in which he allowed one more run to score. After allowing three runners to reach base in the seventh, Kilome was removed from the game. Ryan has not allowed a run in his last five appearances.

St. Lucie (54-76) vs. Jupiter (70-64)

St. Lucie’s final game of the season was cancelled due to inclement weather. Because the Florida State League regular season ended on Sunday, the game will not be made up.

Columbia (64-69) 1, Augusta (66-70) 0  Box Score

The Fireflies scored just a single run and didn’t record a hit after the third inning. The lone run of the game scored in the third inning on Paulino’s sixth home run of the season. Paulino is 12-for-37 over his last 10 games.

Dibrell finished his solid season with his dominant start of the year. Dibrell allowed just a single hit over six shutout innings and struck out nine batters. While he only threw 53 of 92 pitches for strikes, Dibrell clearly had electric stuff as all nine of his strikeouts were swinging. Ford was even more impressive in his relief appearance as he struck out eight of ten batters faced. Ford finishes his season with a 32:2 K:BB ratio over 26.2 innings pitched.

Brooklyn (39-35) 5, Staten Island (37-35) 4  Box Score

The Cyclones offense smacked five double en route to a one run victory against the Yankees short-season A-ball affiliate. Adolph snapped a four game hitless streak with a third inning double. The Cyclones’ .704 team OPS this season leads the New-York Penn League.

Butto has struggled since being promoted to Brooklyn and has allowed at least three earned runs in five of his six Cyclones starts. Oxford hasn’t allowed an earned run since July 31 and has done a fantastic job at limiting runs all season despite only striking out 26 batters in 40.1 innings pitched. Over his last six appearances, Wilson has a 20:2 K:BB ratio.

Elizabethton (2-1) 5, Kingsport (1-2) 2  Box Score

Kingsport’s strong offense was held to just two runs on five hits as the team lost the deciding game of the three game series. Despite slumping a bit at the end of the season, Newton maintained his strong plate discipline as he had an 11:7 K:BB ratio over the last 9 games of his season. Jarred Kelenic went 0-for-5 in the final game of his debut season, snapping a 12-game hit streak. He finished the season with a .286/.371/.468 slash line with 15 steals between Kingsport and the GCL.

  • RHP Nate Peden (0-0, 5.40 ERA) 1.2 IP, 3 H, ER, BB, 2 K
  • RHP Andrew Ryan (0-0, 5.40 ERA) 1.2 IP, 3 H, ER, BB, 2 K

Nunez started the game hoping to keep Kingsport’s season alive, but just couldn’t put together a strong enough outing to lead the Mets to victory. Nunez struggled with control, needing 96 pitches to make it through 4.1 innings and walking four batters. The bullpen would allow two more runs score which ultimately put the game out of reach.
