Brett Baty, Francisco Alvarez Impress in Pro Debuts

The Gulf Coast League Mets season started on Tuesday afternoon with a roster that includes 2019 first rounder Brett Baty, 2019 second rounder Josh Wolf, and Mets top international free agent from the 2018-2019 class Francisco Alvarez.

Adrian Hernandez led off for the GCL Mets in their 11-8 win of the season opener. Hernandez, given $1.5 million bonus in 2017, went 2-for-5 with a homer and stolen base in his stateside debut. The 18-year-old player right field.

Baty, 19, batted second and played the entire game at third base. He went 1-for-4 with a walk, double, and scored a run in his pro debut.

The 17-year-old Alvarez had promising debut reaching base three times. He went 2-for-4 with two doubles, walk, RBI, and two runs scored as the cleanup hitter and catcher.

William Lugo, another IFA signee from 2018-2019 period, make his pro debut going 1-for-5 with an RBI and run scored as the Mets’ shortstop.

Two 2019 draft picks impressed in their pro debuts as Branden Fryman (21st) went 3-for-4 with three RBI and Nick Conti (39th round) went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a homer.
