Syracuse (46-48) 20, Indianapolis (47-46) 1 Box Score
- 2B/3B Arismendy Alcantara: 4-for-4, 4 R, 3B, HR(8), 3 RBI(30), BB | .314/.386/.562
- C Rene Rivera: 2-for-5, 2 R, 2 HR(17), 4 RBI(55), BB, 3 K | .273/.327/.506
- RF/1B Travis Taijeron: 2-for-5, 2 R, 2 HR(19), 5 RBI(55), BB, K | .236/.360/.552
The Syracuse offense jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning thanks to three separate home runs from Rivera, Taijeron, and Dilson Herrera and they never looked back. By the end of the night the Mets had racked up twenty runs on twenty-two hits including seven home runs.
- RHP Corey Oswalt: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 K, 0 BB, Win | 5-2, 4.15 ERA, 1.36 WHIP
Outside of a second inning home run, Oswalt comfortably cruised through six innings of work as he did not allowed a runner to reach scoring position until the end of his night. If the big league club shuffles the rotation to take advantage of yesterday’s off-day, Oswalt’s strong performance gives him at least a chance to be called up to make a start in place of the injured Zack Wheeler when the Mets would need their fifth starter again on July 20th.
Reading (56-37) 4, Binghamton (47-44) 1 Box Score
- RF Braxton Lee: 1-for-4, R, 2B, K | .283/.358/.374
- C Patrick Mazeika: 1-for-3, RBI(49), K | .253/.320/.435
A quiet day offensively for the Rumble Ponies as the team only mustered four hits on the night with Mazeika driving in the only run of the game on a sacrifice fly.
- RHP Harol Gonzalez: 6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 K, 2 BB, Loss | 4-4, 3.52 ERA, 1.11 WHIP
- RHP Ryder Ryan: 2.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 K, 0 BB | 2-1, 5.11 ERA, 1.38 WHIP
Gonzalez was fantastic last night holding the best team in the Eastern League to only one run on four hits in his six innings of work. Unfortunately, Gonzalez would be saddled with the tough luck loss as Phillies top prospect, Adonis Medina was slightly better on the other side allowing only three hits in his seven innings of work.
West Virginia (49-46) 5, Columbia (37-54) 0 Box Score
- SS Ronny Mauricio: 1-for-4, 2B | .276/.312/.374
- LF Wagner Lagrange: 1-for-3, 2B | .272/.316/.416
Not much offense to speak of in this one for the Fireflies as they were held to only three hits on the night. The team has really struggled against the West Virginia Power this season as this was their fourth loss against them in as many games. In those four games, they have been held to an average of one run per game and four hits per game.
- RHP Christian James: 5.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 5 K, 1 BB, Loss | 3-8, 4.38 ERA, 1.45 WHIP
- RHP Cole Gordon: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 K, 0 BB | 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 0.75 WHIP
James was decent enough through the first five innings of the game and had the chance to produce a quality start as he started the sixth inning. However, a lead-off double followed by a two run home run put a damper on the stat line and knocked him out of the game. On a more positive note, 2019 32nd round draftee Cole Gordon continues to be unhittable since starting his professional career although he did allow his first run of the season (unearned) due to a throwing error by Mauricio followed by an RBI single.
Brooklyn (17-13) 4, West Virginia (15-15) 0 Box Score
- C Jose Mena: 1-for-3, R, 2B, RBI(5) | .281/.303/.406
- RF Anthony Dirocie: 2-for-3, R, HR(1), 3 RBI(6) | .175/.244/.250
The bottom half of the Cyclones put in all the work yesterday for the team as the six through nine batters accounted for five of the team’s seven hits on the night and all four runs. It’s been a tough year for Dirocie as he’s struggled in stints with both Columbia and Brooklyn, but he was the hero in this one as his three run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning sealed the victory for the Cyclones.
- RHP Garrison Bryant: 5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 7 K, 2 BB, Win | 2-1, 4.18 ERA, 1.18 WHIP
Bryant tossed his best game of the season as he held the Black Bears to only two hits on the day while striking out seven for the third time this year. After three seasons in the Rookie Leagues, Bryant seems to be thriving as a full-time starter for the Cyclones as he’s held opponents to a .206 AVG against while striking out 28% of the batters he’s faced.
Greenville (11-15) 5, Kingsport (13-13) 2 Box Score
- CF Kennie Taylor: 1-for-3, RBI(7), K | .295/.310/.410
- RF Scott Ota: 1-for-3, RBI(8), HBP | .257/.364/.432
The Kingsport offense was limited to only four hits while striking out a total of thirteen times. Taylor and Ota accounted for the team’s only runs as they each drove in one in the top of the fifth inning. After that though, the Mets would not have a single base-runner the rest of the game.
- RHP Michel Otanez: 4.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 8 K, 2 BB | 2-1, 3.86 ERA, 1.13 WHIP
- LHP Hector Rodriguez: 0.2 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 K, 2 BB | 1-2, 8.49 ERA, 1.71 WHIP
Otanez was nails once again for Kingsport as he struck out eight batters for the third time this season. He’s really been locked in during the month of July as he’s pitched to a 2.45 ERA while holding opponents to a .152 AVG/.496 OPS and striking out 41% of the batters he’s faced (21-of-51). Otanez left the game with Kingsport ahead 2-1 but the bullpen would cough it up thanks to an RBI double off of 2019 23rd round draftee, Nick MacDonald, in the fifth inning and a three run home run off Rodriguez in the sixth inning.
GCL Mets (10-7) 11, GCL Cardinals (7-12) 7 Box Score
- RF Kenedy Corona: 3-for-5, 3 R, HR(2), 3 RBI(7), SB(4) | .281/.395/.500
- 3B Jose Peroza: 2-for-4, 2 R, 2B, HR(5), 2 RBI(13) | .277/.340/.681
Every player in the GCL lineup reached base at least once as the Mets scored eleven runs on twelve hits and four walks. After proofing to be one of the best hitters on the DSL Mets 2 squad, Corona continued his strong 2019 season hitting his second home run of the season for the GCL team and boosting his OPS to .895 which is the second best on the team. The team’s top performer continues to be Peroza who hit his league leading fifth home run of the season.
- RHP Zach Hammer: 4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 K, 2 BB | 0-0, 1.69 ERA, 0.94 WHIP
- RHP Jeffrey Colon: 2.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 K, 1 BB, Win | 1-0, 8.18 ERA, 2.09 WHIP
After pitching sparingly in 2018 due to his High School workload, 2018 21st round pick Zach Hammer continued his strong 2019 season with another four innings of shutout ball. Over his last two appearances, Hammer has thrown nine scoreless innings pitched while holding opponents to only three hits and striking out eight.
DSL Mets1 (18-15) 3, DSL Orioles2 (15-18) 2 Box Score
- CF Franklin Linares: 1-for-5, 2 RBI(16), K | .301/.374/.417
- RF Freddy Valdez: 1-for-5, RBI(18), K | .270/.349/.421
The DSL Mets1 offense struggled with runners in scoring position in this one going 2-for-13 in those situations while leaving a total of eleven runners on base. One of those hits resulted in two runs scoring though as Linares grounded one up the middle with runners on second and third to score them both. With the bases loaded and the game tied 2-2 in the ninth inning, Valdez would walk it off with a sharp grounder up the middle that the Orioles second baseman could handle resulting in the game winning run to score.
- LHP Javier Atencio: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 K, 0 BB | 0-1, 3.52 ERA, 1.70 WHIP
- RHP Jose Valdez: 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 K, 0 BB, Win | 0-1, 3.52 ERA, 1.70 WHIP
Atencio registered his first quality start of the season as he tossed six innings for the first time this season. Valdez continues his strong season out of the bullpen as he shut the door on the Orioles with three near perfect innings of work. Since allowed two runs on June 17th, Valdez has tossed 16.2 scoreless innings across seven appearances, holding batters to a .109 AVG while striking out 21.
DSL Rangers2 (14-16) 10, DSL Mets2 (9-21) 9 Box Score
- CF Dyron Campos: 3-for-5, 2 R, 2B, RBI(11), K | .333/.404/.438
- C Kevin Torres: 2-for-5, 2 RBI(18), K | .224/.337/.306
The DSL2 team totaled sixteen hits on the day but were largely station to station as all but two of them were singles. Despite starting the season with the DSL 1 team, struggling for most of the season, and not playing every day, Torres’ two RBI day gives him the team lead in the category.
- RHP Ricardo Rodriguez: 4.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 5 K, 2 BB | 2-1, 6.19 ERA, 1.94 WHIP
- LHP Daniel Juarez: 3.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 6 K, 1 BB | 0-1, 6.75 ERA, 1.71 WHIP
It wasn’t pretty but Rodriguez and Juarez combined for seven innings of work with Juarez being in position for the win when he left the game in the eight inning. The bullpen would blow the save in the eighth inning, as they allowed an inherited runner to score to tie the game, and then completely melt-down in the ninth inning allowed four runs to score on four walks, a hit-by-pitch, one hit, and a walk-off sacrifice fly.
