Mets catching prospect Ali Sanchez has been promoted to Triple-A Syracuse, a source told MMN on Wednesday. The move immediately opens up a roster spot for the recently-acquired Austin Bossart at Double-A Binghamton, although a corresponding move for Syracuse is currently unknown.

Sanchez, 22, was recently named as the organization’s 17th-best prospect at MetsMerized Online. Long heralded as a defensive-minded backstop, Sanchez has enjoyed a career-year with the bat, posting a .278 BA and .337 OBP through Tuesday, both stateside bests. In June, Sanchez slashed .375/.416/.472 for the Rumble Ponies.

Still, some haven’t seen much in terms of a profile change out of Sanchez. He’s still a fair bet to reach the majors as an emergency catcher, but that’s a far cry from scouting reports of years past. As young as he is, however, there’s still a chance that with increased strength and maturation, Sanchez could become something more.

While he was Rule 5 eligible last offseason, it’s possible that the Mets could look to add Sanchez to the 40-man roster over the coming months with just two catchers, Tomas Nido and Wilson Ramos, under reserve going forward.
