With MLB.com unveiling their Top 100 Prospect list today , the New York Mets are represented by four players from their minor league system.
The consensus number one Mets prospect came in at number 62, shortstop Ronny Mauricio . This comes after his season in Columbia in which the 18-year old hit .268/.307/.357 with 20 doubles, five triples, four homers, and 37 RBI. This is an 18 spot jump from his end of 2019 rankings.
Much like the Baseball America’s list, Mauricio is directly followed by catcher Francisco Alvarez at number 63. This is his first showing on the list and it comes as no surprise.
Alvarez,17, would make the most of his first time playing stateside going from the Gulf Coast league to playing in Kingsport before the summer ended. He would finishing the year hitting .312/.407/.510 with 10 doubles, seven homers, and 26 RBI as well as receiving praise for his defense behind the plate.
Andres Gimenez would see his “down” 20-year-old season in AA, yet strong AFL performance land him at number 84. The shortstop receives a bump up the list from 2019 as he finished the year at number 92. He will look to keep up the play he established this fall when he hit .371/.423/.586 through 75 plate appearances while continuing to provide above average defensive play in 2020.
The last Mets prospect to make the list is third baseman Brett Baty at number 93.
Baty, 20, was the Mets first round draft pick in 2019, 12th overall. Known to be an advanced hitter with power potential, Baty provided a glimpse of what is to come hitting 16 doubles and seven home runs through 228 plate appearances over three different levels in 2019. Baty takes a slight slip from his 2019 ranking that had him at number 81.
With all four of these players having landed on the lower half of the list it will be intriguing to see how they fare as the season progresses and if they can make their way into the upper echelon. We will also be looking to see if any other of the fringe top 100 guys in the Mets system can crack the mid-season list.
