MMN Recap: Baty and Alvarez Blast Oppo Homers for Brooklyn

AAA: Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (35-16) 8, Syracuse Mets (15-38) 3 Box Score

Davis, on rehab assignment, played five innings at third base and walked three times in his three plate appearances. Wilfredo Tovar opened the scoring with a solo home run in the fourth. Syracuse threatened in the sixth after a Lee double and Tovar single, but a double play ended the inning. First baseman Cheslor Cuthbert hit a solo home run in the seventh, and Williams singled and scored later in the inning.

Szapucki loaded the bases with two outs in the first, then got a strikeout to escape the inning unscathed. The lefty’s outing unraveled in the fourth inning after he committed a fielding error that allowed the leadoff batter to reach base. With runners on first and second, Scranton pulled off a double steal, and a throwing error by catcher Chance Sisco allowed the lead runner to score. Scranton’s Andrew Velazquez reached on a fielder’s choice, stole two bases, then scored on a sacrifice fly. Schugel pitched 3 ⅓ scoreless innings and struck out five. 

AA: Binghamton Rumble Ponies (19-34) 3, New Hampshire Fisher Cats (23-29) 2 Box Score

Mangum led off the bottom of the first with a double, and he came around to score on a New Hampshire wild pitch. With runners on the corners and no outs in the fifth, Mangum hit into a fielder’s choice to score a run. Meyer then singled to drive in Binghamton’s second run of the inning. 

Beggs turned in three strong innings before giving up a solo home run in the fourth. In the fifth, Beggs allowed the first three hitters to reach base safely. Orze entered in relief and got a flyout and strikeout to get out of the jam. Gilliam entered in the eighth and chipped in two perfect innings with three strikeouts to earn the save. 

A+: Hudson Valley Renegades (35-19) 9, Brooklyn Cyclones (18-35) 7 Box Score

Alvarez led off the fourth with a home run, and Baty did the same in the sixth. After an Alvarez walk in the sixth inning, Ritter hit a two-run home run. Alvarez, 19, reached base safely three times and came around to score all three times. 

Vilera struggled in his start, giving up at least one run during each of his four innings on Tuesday. He gave up a leadoff double in the first and then threw two wild pitches, allowing the runner to score. Vilera gave up three solo home runs in his outing. Montes de Oca struggled with his command in the eighth. He retired the first two batters he faced, then gave up a single, walked three batters and hit a batter, forcing home two runs to give Hudson Valley the lead.

A-: St. Lucie Mets (29-26) 8, Fort Myers Mighty Mussels (31-24) 6 Box Score

Palmer led off the bottom of the first inning with a single, and St. Lucie struck first when Peroza grounded out to drive in the third baseman. In the bottom of the fourth, six straight Mets reached base, five via walks, to force home three runs. Shortstop Anthony Walters led off the sixth with a walk, and he came around to score on a McIlwain double. After a hit by pitch and a walk loaded the bases, a Fort Myers balk forced home another Mets run. Peroza then singled to drive in two more Mets runs.

Moreno struck out eight in only five innings, but he also fell victim to the long ball. After pitching a perfect first inning with two strikeouts, Moreno surrendered a solo home run in the second and a two-run home run in the third. In the ninth, Montas worked around a one-out double to earn the save. 

Rookie: FCL Mets (4-3) 8, FCL Cardinals (2-4) 2 Box Score

The Mets’ offense was silent through the first five innings on Tuesday before plating seven runs in the sixth against the Cardinals. The first two Mets of the inning walked, and the third was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Several Mets hits and Cardinals miscues allowed seven runs to score in the innings. The Mets tacked on an insurance run in the eighth with a De Los Santos solo home run. 

  • RHP Joe Cavallaro (0-0, 0.00): 2.2 IP, R (0 ER), 2 BB, 2 K
  • Robert Colina (W, 1-0, 1.23): 4.1 IP, 3 H, ER, 0 BB, 9 K

Cavallaro, 25, got the nod to make his first start of the season on Tuesday, and the University of South Florida product pitched 2 ⅔ innings. Jose Zorrilla entered in relief with two outs and one runner on base in the third, and a passed ball allowed the Cardinals base runner to score. Colina entered with the bases loaded and two outs in the fourth, and he struck out the first batter he faced to get out of the jam. Chacin closed the game out with a perfect ninth inning.
