Cole Gordon started the 2021 season with no pro starts, no innings of A-Ball, and only 30 innings total in the minor leagues. He now has a 31-inning streak of allowing no earned runs and was just named the Double-A Northeast Pitcher of the Month.
Gordon’s recent dominance gets even wilder when you realize that he didn’t even become a pitcher full-time until his junior year at Mississippi State. When Gordon took the mound on July 31 as the Rumble Ponies starter he had a 5.88 ERA on the season and was averaging less than a strikeout per nine innings.
In that game against the Hartford Yard Goats, the 25-year-old Gordon tossed five hitless innings with eight strikeouts and begun his scoreless streak. From then on, he’s been as lights out as a pitcher can be. He hasn’t allowed an earned run in 31 innings –which includes 26 in August– and he has 38 strikeouts compared to only six walks during that span.
To get more of a visual to see just how good he’s been, let’s take a look at Gordon’s pitching lines from his last five starts:
July 31: 5 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K
August 8: 7 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 10 K
August 13: 5 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 10 K
August 21: 7 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
August 27: 7 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K
Totals: 31 IP, 8 H, 0 ER, 6 BB, 38 K
With the strikeout totals you would assume that Gordon is a hard thrower, but he’s more 88-92 mph guy with his fastball. He will consistently use the firm fastball up in the zone. He also loves to use his curveball or slider in any count, and he gets a high number of swings and misses on both pitches.
During his recent stretch of success, Gordon has shown plus command of all three pitches.
