The adulation around the game for the Mets top two prospects continues to mount. CBS Sports released their top 20 MLB prospects list Monday, and ranked Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez (#7) and Brett Baty (#14) in this elite grouping.
On Alvarez, 20, the site notes that Alvarez’ power at the catcher position is something that you hardly ever see, posting 24 home runs across two levels of A-ball and exit velocities among the very best power hitting prospects in the game.
With third baseman Brett Baty, 22, making the list after his huge showing last season culminating in double-A Binghamton, slashing .292/.382/.473, CBS talks about both the immense potential and work to be done:
Baty’s boosters see a strong-bodied third baseman who could be a plus hitter. There are some areas of concern to keep in mind with him, however, as his strikeout (25.6 percent) and groundball (61.2 percent) rates at Double-A suggest he wasn’t maximizing skill set, especially considering his well-above-average raw juice.
Baty was indeed young for getting his first taste of double-A, and has shown the ability already to adapt his swing and approach since being drafted. Doubtless, he will look to further cement his position as one of the games brightest young hitting prospects in the upcoming 2022 season.
