After an awesome week at the plate that culminated with the EL Player of the Week Award, it only makes sense that he receives our own Player of the Week award — so congratulations to Daniel Muno!
My colleague Matt Musico in his piece yesterday, so I’ll quote:
The second baseman had a big week in Double-A for the B-Mets. While his career-high seven RBI game on July 4th was a big help, he hit .417 over the past seven days (10-24) with three home runs, 12 RBIs, one double, five runs scored, and two stolen bases. Muno recorded at least one hit in five of the six games he suited up for, and collected more than one hit in four of those games.
As I said last week when featuring him, Muno has the ability to get hot in the second half of the season; after being drafted by the Mets in June 2011, the second baseman headed for Brooklyn, and tore up the NYPL with a .355/.466/.514 line. If he follows suit in the second half of this season, Muno could be putting himself in prime position to possibly make an impact in the big leagues sometime in 2014.
The Mets developed a few guys out of what people viewed as the same mold — Muno, T.J. Rivera, Phillip Evans and perhaps even L.J. Mazzilli now — middle infielders with above-average offensive talent for their positions and the ability to flash enough leather to get by. The ideology behind that is simple: one of them likely is going to make it, and the Mets would have produced a offensive-minded middle infielder to play for them on the cheap. Muno was a fast mover through our system before he received a suspension for PEDs, and I mentioned in the offseason that he may see time in the MLB by 2014. He has no plus tools, but he is definitely a solid player across the board.
