Mets center field prospect Alex Ramirez has been named the Florida State League Player of the Week. The 19-year-old went 15-for-28 with three doubles, two triples, and a home run over the last week.
Ramirez is now hitting .385/.423/.606 with nine doubles, three triples, two homers, and 15 RBIs along with two stolen bags over the course of his first 111 plate appearances for the St. Lucie Mets.
As I noted earlier today in a Tweet, Ramirez is second among minor leaguers younger than 21 with his 196 wRC+ this year. Despite returning to the Florida State League to start the 2022 season, Ramirez is still over two years younger than average league age. He will play the entire season at 19 before finally turning 20 next January.
To show off his all-around offensive skills, Ramirez is leading the league with 40 hits and is also 11th with his .221 isolated slugging percentage. The youngster is only striking out 18% of the time as well, that’s down from 31% in 2021 and one of the lowest clips among qualified hitters.
Keith Law of The Athletic surprised people when he ranked Ramirez as the No. 100 prospect in baseball, but now looks like Keith was ahead of the game. If Ramirez keeps hitting like he has to start the season in St. Lucie, he will certainly get a promotion to High-A Brooklyn and will make more top 100 lists.
Two things to keep an eye on going forward for Ramirez will be to see if he can improve upon his 5% walk rate this year and if he will become a better base stealer (2 SB/2 CS) with his almost plus speed.
