The New York Mets have optioned Stephen Nogosek to Triple-A Syracuse, and the team has recalled Jake Reed. By and large, this is a move designed to provide the Mets bullpen with a fresh available arm in the bullpen.

After Tylor Megill was lifted after allowing eight runs over 1 1/3 innings, Trevor Williams and Nogosek combined to pitch the final 6 2/3 inning of the game. As a result, both relievers are unavailable for the finale of the three game series against the Washington Nationals.

Nogosek pitched three scoreless and hitless innings walking two and striking out three. This would actually mark the second time in his brief Major League career where he was called upon to pitch three innings. He did it last season against the Cincinnati Reds after Robert Stock had to leave the game early with an injury.

Before his promotion, Nogosek had made seven appearances for Triple-A Syracuse. He was 1-0 with one save, a 1.69 ERA, 0.656 WHIP, 1.7 BB/9, and an 11.0 K/9.

Notably, Nogosek is on his final minor league option. Another important factor here is with the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, Nogosek can only be called up to the majors four more times before he is placed on waivers.

As noted, in Nogosek’s place will be Reed. Reed had made his Major League debut last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers. After six appearances, he was designated for assignment and claimed by the Tampa Bay Rays. Later in the season, the Rays designated him for assignment, and he was claimed by the Mets.

In total, Reed made 10 appearances in the majors last season. He was 0-1 with a 3.60 ERA, 1.071 WHIP, 1.8 BB/9, and a 9.0 K/9. So far this season, he has made four appearances for Triple-A Syracuse. He is 0-0 with a 7.94 ERA, 1.412 WHIP, 3.2 BB/9, and a 9.5 K/9.

Reed has two Major League options remaining. As with Nogosek, if the Mets were to send him back to Triple-A this season, the team will only be able to recall him four more times before having to place him on waivers.
