Savannah 1, Augusta 0

Game two of the three game series between the Savannah Sand Gnats and the Augusta GreenJackets was played in front of 1,580 fans Wednesday evening at Grayson Stadium. Augusta out hit Savannah 8-4, but Savannah ended up winning the pitcher’s duel, 1-0.

The only run of the game was scored in the third inning, and it was started by a Phillip Evans double. He eventually came around to score on an throwing error by the opposing pitcher. Jorge Rivero bunted a ball back to the mound, and it was thrown into foul territory as they tried to cut Evans down at third. It sailed over the fielder’s head, allowing Evans to score the first and only run of the contest.

Savannah played excellent defense; the outfield threw out two Augusta runners at the plate, which didn’t help the GreenJackets, as they also stranded seven men on base. It was another fine outing for Savannah starter, Marcos Camarena; he pitched 6.1 shutout innings, allowing eight hits, no walks, and two strikeouts. With the win, Camarena is now 4-0 on the season.

Hunter Carnevale came in to relieve Camarena with 1.2 scoreless innings, collecting one walk and one strikeout. Paul Sewald followed him to earn his third save of the season. He set the side down in order to finish off the game, striking two out.

The final game of the series starts tonight at 7:05 in Savannah. The Sand Gnats will be looking to sweep the series in front of the home crowd at Grayson Stadium.
